Steely Metal Merchant Wins in Style

On Saturday, April 20th, METAL MERCHANT took the OLBG Spring Cup at Newbury and showcased his strength and power in the process. This was a truly exceptional performance from a four year who has always given his all.

Having first impressed as a juvenile and finishing with a solid 3-year-old campaign last year, he’s truly given the West Ilsley team plenty to look forward to in 2024 after a long and arduous winter.

It was a real boost to all the team and owners, namely Susie Burrage, George Smith and their very happy circle of friends in the Recycled Products Ltd Partnership.

It was a fun filled afternoon and their son of Make Believe will hopefully go from strength to strength.

Metal Merchant gave an exemplary display of his talent under jockey David Probert to finish strongly in the closing stages, half a length ahead of the favourite, Godwinson.

Jack’s confidence in Metal Merchant has allowed him to now set his sights on Royal Ascot:

He’s a lovely horse who banged his head against the wall in some good races last year. We gelded him over the winter, and his work has been exceptional during the spring.

“He’s going to be a nice horse to go for those big mile handicaps and could well be another Johan. Who knows! I’d love to leave him now for the Royal Hunt Cup, but we will have to see how much he goes up (in the ratings) and see.

“He’s the type of horse who suits these big handicaps, as he travels so well and he’s got a fantastic cruising speed.”

As this impressive horse continues to show his metal, everyone at West Isley Stables is excited to watch Metal Merchant progress through the season.

Well done to all the team - Here Comes The Sun!
