Our French raider takes the readies!

A night of bitterness and resentment saw a star of the yard take home the staff’s prize of £25,000* whilst the rest of us grumbled and sulked at The Harrow pub in West Ilsley, claiming that the victor was lucky and the rest of us were robbed blind in the staff’s Five to Follow competition.

The rules are simple - each member of the team picks his or her five ‘best’ horses in April and their subsequent performances in the following seven months are tallied up in a ‘points system’ that surely needs reviewing.

This year, it was the turn of Marion Ripoll to take the plaudits, platitudes and pelters as she reaped the rewards sown by her top five picks:

Sera Dawn, Indian Creak, Miguel, Continuance and Miss Mach One did the damage for our Gallic lass, all of whom she cares for and all of whom she rides out daily.

Talk about being a jammy sod.

None of us were delighted for her and once the presentation photo was taken, we all stomped home.

Marion and ‘The Envelope’

We haven’t spoken to her since.

*Cash prize might be exaggerated.
